Biogenesis Spirulina is a blue-green algae containing a wide range of natural nutrients, including chlorophyll and phycocyanin, the super blue antioxidant unique to Spirulina. It is rich in protein, vitamins, including B12, and minerals, including magnesium which is necessary for normal nerve and muscle function and contains a natural source of iron. Spirulina has been recognised by many different cultures over the centuries as a protein rich nutritionally dense whole food. The ancient Aztecs in the sixteenth century collected it in fine nets and made it into a blue green cake. It continues to be harvested and consumed by the Kanebu population living along the shores of Lake Chad in East Africa.
